Registration

There is a ten dollar registration fee per child, not per class. Deadline for forms to be returned is Monday, March 17 . Please make checks payable to: Pierce School Extended Day. Leave the check and form in the box outside near the main office or PSED office. The materials fee is included in the tuition. Register early as some classes have limited enrollment and will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis.

Program Dates

Classes begin on Monday, April 14 and run for 7-8 weeks. Classes will be held on early dismissal day. The are no classes on school holidays, school vacation, and snow days. Classes may be canceled due to inclement weather. Due to the scheduling of enrichment classes, we can not offer more than one make-up class due to inclement weather or snow days. All classes will be made up due to instructor absences. Make-up classes will be scheduled as needed at the conclusion of the course.

Confirmation and Course Cancellation

Final class lists and room assignments will be posted near the main office. This will be the only notification you will receive and we encourage you to check the list to confirm enrollment.

We will contact you only if there is a problem with registration or if the class is not full. We reserve the right to cancel a course for which there is insufficient registration. Every attempt will be made to place a child in a canceled class into another class of his/her choice. PLEASE NOTE: There are no refunds or credit for classes once your child has been registered . Refunds will only be issued if the class is canceled.

Arrival and Departure

Please be informed that PSED does not accept responsibility for locating children who do not show up for enrichment classes. Due to the large number of children participating in the classes, the PSED Enrichment Coordinator is unable to track children who do not arrive at their class. Children who attend PSED on the day of their enrichment class will be tracked by their PSED teachers. Kindergarten children attending PSED will be transported by the PSED staff. We require parents of kindergarten children to arrange a responsible person to transport your child to his/her class. We strongly encourage parents to discuss the importance of going directly to the class they are enrolled in, remaining with the teacher for the entire length of the class, and waiting for their pick up person in the classroom when the class is over.

Discipline

In order to maintain a healthy, productive environment for students enrolled in classes, all children will be required to exhibit appropriate behavior. If an instructor believes that a child is disruptive to the program, he or she will be temporarily removed from the class and the enrichment coordinator will notify his or her parent. If the situation recurs, the child may be excluded from future classes. We ask for your cooperation by communicating these expectations to your child and by enrolling your child only in those classes, which are of interest to him or her.

We encourage families to share additional information about their child’s needs so it can be shared with the enrichment instructor and enrichment coordinator. Please fill out the form on the back side of the registration.

Volunteer Program (Grades 4-8)

The enrichment program is looking for students in grades 4 through 8 to help assist instructors with classes. Please fill out registration form and write that you are interested in volunteering for a specific class (it needs to be a class for children in grade K-3). Movie passes are given to students who complete the 8-10 week class. The enrichment coordinator will call you to set up a time to discuss this program.

More Creative Drama M 2:15-3:15 Grades K,1,2
Instructor: Aiza Yarrow

Creative Drama will mix theatre games and storytelling adventures for a fun-filled Monday afternoon which will enhance all of our creativity. If you can imagine yourself walking like a crab through an imaginary beach, becoming your favorite character from your favorite story, or just like using your imagination, this is the class for you! Whether you were in the Fall or Spring Creative Drama class, or have never stepped foot inside a drama class, start your week by bringing your imagination to Creative Drama on Monday afternoon. 6 weeks ($65) THIS CLASS BEGINS MONDAY, APRIL 28

Instructor: Aiza Yarrow

Have you ever imagined yourself winning an Oscar for best actor or best actress? Would you like to take home a shiny trophy for your best performance ever? Join Pierce Oscars for a 6 week long search for the best of the best. Each week we'll explore a different style of acting (comedy, drama, improvisation) and give awards for the best-of-the-best. Join Pierce Oscars where everyone's a winner, and each week someone gets to give their best thank-you speech on microphone! 6 weeks ($65) THIS CLASS BEGINS MONDAY, APRIL 28

Aliza is a community theatre artist and graduate student in clinical psychology, she spends her days studying and her afternoons engrossed in the world of theatre. In the past few years, Aliza has been honored to help many groups of kids find their inner voices and express themselves on stage throughout the city-- with Zumix in East Boston, High Flight Creative in Waltham, Big Draw in Roxbury, and Beaver Summer Programs in Chestnut Hill.)

Move and Groove! M 2:15-3:15 Grades K,1
Instructor: Lexi Fournier

Start a healthy fitness habit for your child with this energy-packed movement class with a focus on fun. Your child will enjoy the benefits of cardiovascular, strength, balance and flexibility training all while having a blast! Dance and fitness principles will be the foundations for games and drills that your child will love. Students will enjoy some new games as well as some of our old favorites. 7 weeks ($75))

Lexi is a personal trainer and fitness instructor at Fitness Unlimited as well as other gyms throughout Boston. She is an AFAA certified Personal Trainer, Group Exercise Instructor, and Step Instructor. Prior to her work at Fitness Unlimited, Lexi was a OCCS certified preschool teacher in the South Shore.

NEW! Fantastic Foods! M 2:15-3:15 Grades 3,4,5,6
Instructor: Ellen Lowre

Keeping food exciting and fresh - Kids will be able to prepare, cook, and taste new yummy recipes like fruit pizza, Earth Day bars, vegetable flowers with homemade ranch dip, and better for you brownies. Learn how foods can taste good and be good for you at the same time! This class will also focus on using as much local and in season foods as possible. 7 weeks ($75)

Ellen Lowre is a dietitian who earned a Bachelors of Science in Dietetics from Framingham State College and is also a certified personal trainer. She currently has an office at Fitness Unlimited in Brookline Village where she works with both children and adults in reaching their nutrition goals.

NEW! Jazz Dance Class Tu 2:15-3:15 Grades 2,3,4,5
NEW Instructor: Jessica Bennett

There’s a dancer in every child. Having fun, exploring movements, concepts, developing dance skills, strengthening the body and brain, and interacting with others---it all happens in this jazz dance class. Children will learn to recognize rhythm and enhance coordination through dance and body movement. Children will be encouraged to explore and experiment with the elements of dance against a rich background of musical sounds. 8 weeks ($85)

Jessica has an extensive background in Jazz, Tap, Street-Funk, and Hip-Hop Dance. She is currently a graduate student at Northeastern University studying School Psychology. She is a member of the professional dance company Boston Tap Company. She has taught dance in many different settings and places through out Connecticut.

Instructor: Sara Marx

Do you enjoy preparing foods and spending time in the kitchen? This class will help children learn to cook and create delicious afternoon snacks. Some snacks that children will prepare and enjoy include popsicles, chocolate chip pancakes, smoothies, dips, crepes, and parfaits! Children will use their math and writing skills to recreate recipes that they will want to make again and again! 8 weeks ($85)

Sara Marx is in her second year of teaching fifth grade at Pierce. She holds a B.S. from Boston University and an M.Ed from Simmons.

NEW! Crafts from Around the World F 2:15-3:15 Grades K,1,2,3
Instructor: Stacy Pauly

Grab your passport to explore multicultural arts and crafts around the world. Some stops include Guatemala where you will make a worry doll, travel off too Japan and make unique Japanese fans, explore Egypt with sand paper art, and so much more! Other destinations may include Australia, China, Africa, and Russia. This craft class will include paper crafts, painting, and other craft materials. Each class will begin with a story and brief description about the country or continent. Each child will also track the destination on a passports or world map. Let the adventures begin! 8 weeks ($85)

Stacy has been working at the Pierce School for the last three years. One of her favorite hobbies is doing and teaching crafts!

Instructor: Yun Fang

Chinese class is fun! Through projects, games, songs and learning materials, students will learn Chinese words, basic sentences, a little writing, culture, and music. This course will open a door of China and Chinese language and culture for the beginners from K-1. 8 weeks ($85)

NEW! Mandarin F 3:15-4:15 Grades 2,3
Instructor: Yun Fang

Chinese language is interesting to learn! Students will learn basic conversation and reading of Chinese language, and get touch with the writing and culture. Cultural projects, games and songs will be applied to make the class exiting and fun!. 8 weeks ($85)

Yun Fang has been teaching Chinese language and music in Boston area since 2003. She is an active figure in international communications with linguistic background. Fang is an honored council member of several traditional Chinese musicians associations. She is devoted to advanced, modern and interactive teaching and learning styles. Fang received her master’s degree in journalism from Emerson College.

NEW! Computer Game Design-Build-It-Yourself Tu 2:15-3:45 Grades 2,3
Instructor: John Galianto and Build It Yourself Staff

Do you ever dream about being a computer game developer? You'll write a game storyline, record sound effects and draw far out game characters. Then we'll bring them all to life in a time machine, a dance competition or an outer space game using a new computer programming language developed at MIT called Scratch. Go to the Build-It-Yourself Gallery to see examples of the characters and games we're making with Scratch. 8 weeks ($125)

It is essential that children who enroll in one of the Build-It-Yourself programs come eager to learn and willing to work on teams of 2 or 3. Children must respect their teammates and each others work.

NEW! Animation W 2:15-3:15 Grades 4,5,6
Instructor: Sandra Sicard

Students will learn to use Scratch, a new programming language, to create animations. Scratch allows kids to program simply by snapping together blocks (commands). Students first will create an interactive maze by drawing a background and moving a character through the maze. Then students will create an animated picture in which they learn how to move a variety of characters on the screen. If students choose, they can share their animations with others via the Web. Scratch allows students to be as creative as they desire! 8 weeks ($85)

Sandra Sicard is the Educational Technology Specialist at Pierce. Prior to working at Pierce, Ms. Sicard spent ten years conducting technology integration professional development for teachers. She formerly taught math and science to students in grades 5-8.

Checkmate Th 2:10-3:10 Grades K,1,2
Instructor: Carlos Fuentes

In this class we will discover the potential of chess; how we can use it to develop problem-solving skills, how to be patient, respect the gameand participants, and how to improve our chess skills. 8 weeks ($85) THIS CLASS STARTS AT 2:10 P.M.

Chess Club Th 3:15-4:15 Grades 2,3,4,5,6
Instructor: Carlos Fuentes

This class is intended for all who have had chess experience and would like to improve their play through continued instruction and participation. Designed for children in Grades 2-6 to further their interest, to sharpen their skills, and to have fun! 8 weeks ( $85 )

Body Works Th 2:15-3:15 Grades 3,4,5,6
Instructor: Regina O’Brien

Body Works is a complete body workout. It is beneficial for building core strength, balance, and mental focus. The class incorporates props such as pillow discs, gliders, resistance tubing, and weighted energy balls to keep things fun and interesting. Dynamic pilates, yoga exercises, and fun games are performed to improve body alignment and overall coordination. Each class ends with a quiet time where the focus is on breathing and relaxation. The instructor discusses general fitness and body awareness concepts with the group. This class is especially designed for girls in grades 3-6. This class will take place at Fitness Unlimited Health Club directly next to the Pierce School. 8 weeks ($85).

Regina is the fitness director at Fitness Unlimited. She is the mother of two children. She has worked at many fitness clubs in the Boston area for the last fifteen years.

Sensational Science Th 2:15-3:15 Grades 1,2,3,4
Instructor: Colleen Hogan

There are many exciting science experiments that are not only fun but will teach you how things work and why things happen in the world around us. This class will be packed with predictions, experiments, and drawing conclusions. Come join Colleen in the fun and prepare yourself to be shocked and amazed by what you discover! 8 weeks ($85)

Colleen is a full year, full time intern in Ginny Carroll's third grade class at Pierce. She is a graduate student at Wheelock College studying elementary education.

NEW! Drawing and Nature Tu 2:15-3:15 Grades K,1,2,3
Instructor: Evmorphia Stratis

Students will learn how to draw and compose various shapes onto the square and/or rectangular shape of the paper. Budding branches, flowers, shells and driftwood, fruits and vegetables are some of the objects found in nature that will be used for still life. Drawing tools will be colored pencils, markers, crayons and pastels. Students will learn how to use each medium to get the effect they want for their drawing. The creative process is exciting and fun! 8 weeks ($85)

NEW! Painting With Spring Colors Tu 3:15-4:15 Grades 1,2,3
Instructor: Evmorphia Stratis

Blossoms and blue skies, April showers and May flowers. Students will learn how to capture the colors and energy of spring in their paintings. They will learn about composition, mixing and applying colors and how to express themselves on paper. Students will be delighted by the different effects they can produce by using mixed mediums such as, oil pastels, crayons and paints. Hang your child's favorite painting where the family can enjoy seeing it every day. Making art instills confidence, encourages creative problem solving and helps and all areas of learning for students! 8 weeks ($85)

Evmorphia is a painter who has been teaching art for the past 20 years locally and abroad. Evmorphia taught out of her studio for 10 years. Currently she is teaching at the enrichment programs at the Pierce School and the Devotion School. She also teaches at the The Wellness Community, a center for cancer, support, education and hope.

Mandarin W 3:15-4:15 Grades 5 and 6
Instructor: Mr. Chang

This session Chinese program will start to review Chinese phonetic symbols. Then we will continue to practice pin-yin methods to enhance students' pronunciation skills. The SYM-TALK picture book will be introduced to strengthen their reading and speaking skills. Students will be requested to write Chinese characters and learn how to write them correctly. 8 weeks ($110)

Karate W 2:15-3:15 Grades K,1,2,3,4
W 3:15-4:15 PSED
Instructor: Duane Lucia

Karate develops total body awareness, confidence, and self control. Emphasis is on learning stances, blocks, conditioning, and sparring techniques. The instructor, Duane Lucia, has a black belt and has been teaching karate to children and adults for over 20 years. 8 weeks ($85)

Duane (Sensei) has been teaching martial arts for thirty-five years and is the founder of Sanchin Martial Arts. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts with degrees in psychology and movement education and has been with the Pierce School Enrichment Program for over twenty years.

Knitting Group W 2:15-3:15 Grades 1,2,3,4,5,6
Instructor: Roylene Hunt

This class is for students who want to learn or continue knitting. Students will continue to work on their knitting skills by practicing stitches, increasing, decreasing, casting on, and binding off. Each child will have the opportunity to work on a project while learning new knitting skills. A large skein of yarn and a pair of knitting needles will be provided. 8 weeks ($85)

Roylene is in her third year as a teacher's aide at the Pierce School and has been knitting for over 25 years. She spends her summers visting different knit shops gathering ideas. Her oldest son graduated from BHS and I have two sons that are presently BHS juniors.

NEW! Scrabble Club W 2:15-3:15 Grades 1,2,3,4,
Instructor: Jennifer (Shepard) Berube

You can be a scrabble champion! Join 1st grade Pierce School teacher, Jennifer Berube in this fun class. We will explore word building, discover new vocabulary and learn strategies for scoring high points. Build your vocabulary and enhance mental math skills in our scrabble club. Scrabble's playful challenges build confidence, strengthen memory and spelling ability. Each week the class will be enriched with word activities, puzzles or scoring challenges. Children will create word journals and their own versions of Scrabble. We'll vary our playing in small groups for ourselves, with partners, and on teams. 8 weeks ($85)

The enrichment program is looking for students in grades 4 through 8 to help assist instructors with classes. Start a healthy fitness habit for your child with this energy-packed movement class with a focus on fun. Your child will enjoy the benefits of cardiovascular, strength, balance and flexibility training all while having a blast! Dance and fitness principles will be the foundations for games and drills that your child will love. Students will enjoy some new games as well as some of our favorites from the fall Move It class. 8 weeks ($85) (Lexi is a personal trainer and fitness instructor at Fitness Unlimited as well as other gyms throughout Boston. Do you enjoy working with beads? If so, this is the class for you! Every week we will try out a new medium to make beads or string them into beautiful necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Do you love arts, craft, and acting? Then puppetry is the right place for you! Using arts and craft materials we'll design and make puppets big and small. But these puppets are not just puppets--they will be our guides through magical new worlds we create together. Our puppets will come to life as we help them act out our stories. 8 weeks ($85)

(Aliza is a community theatre artist and graduate student in clinical psychology, she spends her days studying and her afternoons engrossed in the world of theatre. In the past few years, Aliza has been honored to help many groups of kids find their inner voices and express themselves on stage throughout the city-- with Zumix in East Boston, High Flight Creative in Waltham, Big Draw in Roxbury, and Beaver Summer Programs in Chestnut Hill.)

Instructor: Jennifer (Shepard) Berube

Have you ever looked at children's books illustrated by Molly Bang, Elisa Kleven and Exra Jack Keats and wondered, “How do they do that?”. In this class, young artists will work cooperatively to create two and three dimensional art using the collage method of juxtaposing and overlapping papers, fabrics and paints. Students will explore a variety of materials and arrange objects, shapes, colors and textures, and discuss how they used these elements in their collage. We'll explore decoupage when we decorate keepsake boxes. We'll experiment with assemblage when we create unique shadow boxes. We'll try paper mosaic when we design a landscape. We will view works by Picasso, Braque, Cornell and contemporary collage artists. We will be visited by local artist and author Jenn Mason!

Knitting Group W 2:15-3:15 Grades 2,3,4,5,6

Instructor: Roylene Hunt

This class is for students who want to learn or continue knitting. Students will continue to work on their knitting skills by practicing stitches, increasing, decreasing, casting on, and binding off. Each child will have the opportunity to work on a project while learning new knitting skills. A large skein of yarn and a pair of knitting needles will be provided. 8 weeks ($85)

(Roylene is in her third year as a teacher's aide at the Pierce School and has been knitting for over 25 years. She spends her summers visting different knit shops gathering ideas. Her oldest son graduated from BHS and I have two sons that are presently BHS juniors. )

Mandarin W 3:15-4:15 Grades 5 and 6

Instructor: Mr. Chang

This session Chinese program will start to review Chinese phonetic symbols. Then we will continue to practice pin-yin methods to enhance students' pronunciation skills. The SYM-TALK picture book will be introduced to strengthen their reading and speaking skills. Students will be requested to write Chinese characters and learn how to write them correctly.

This class is intended for all who have had chess experience and would like to improve their play through continued instruction and participation. Designed for children in Grades 2-6 to further their interest, to sharpen their skills, and to have fun! 8 weeks ( $85 )

In this class, older students will be introduced or re-introduced to Spanish through age-appropriate activities which may include games, reading, writing and some hand-on activities in arts and crafts. 8 weeks ($85)

Maria Elena is a native speaker who has been teaching Spanish and English for twenty years to children and adults. Maria Elena has an undergraduate degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies and a Masters in Teaching English as Another Language. She is the mother of two school age children.)

Body Works Th 2:15-3:15 Grades 3,4,5,6

Instructor: CC Maher

Body Works is a complete body workout. It is beneficial for building core strength, balance, and mental focus. The class incorporates props such as pillow discs, gliders, resistance tubing, and weighted energy balls to keep things fun and interesting. Dynamic pilates, yoga exercises, and fun games are performed to improve body alignment and overall coordination. Each class ends with a quiet time where the focus is on breathing and relaxation. The instructor discusses general fitness and body awareness concepts with the group. This class is especially designed for girls in grades 3-6. This class will take place at Fitness Unlimited Health Club directly next to the Pierce School. 8 weeks ($85)

(CC is the General Manager of Fitness Unlimited Health Club , where she advocates a holistic approach to wellness that incorporates a realistic exercise schedule, balanced eating, and a positive outlook. CC has her master's degree in developmental psychology and is the mother of two young girls.)

Creative Dance F 2:15-3:15 Grades 1,2,3

There's a dancer in every child. Having fun, exploring movements, concepts, developing dance skills, strengthening the body and brain, and interacting with others---it all happens in this creative dance class. Children will learn to recognize rhythm and enhance coordination through dance and body movement. Children will be encouraged to explore and experiment with the elements of dance against a rich background of musical sounds. 7 weeks ($80)

Do you enjoy creating creatures? In this class children will use a yarn, pom-poms, crafts sticks, rocks, pipe cleaners, felt, and much more! Using the materials children will create insects, animals, people, aliens, and critters. Each week will focus around a specific creature and materials. This craft class will be a blast! 7 weeks ($80)

NEW! Painting Colors of Winter Tu 2:15-3:15 Grades K,1,2,3

Instructor: Evmorphia Stratis

Learn how to paint winter scenes; snow flakes and snow, ice and ice skating, skiing, mountains and crystal clear star filled skies! There are many colors in winter. If you start getting cold you can always paint a tropical vacation scene! We will be using collage as a medium in this class; cutting and pasting bits of colored paper onto the watercolor paper,adding texture and vibrancy. 8 weeks ($85)

NEW! Drawing Through Winter Tu 3:15-4:15 Grades 1,2,3

Instructor: Evmorphia Stratis

Explore the beauty of winter! Capture the season in drawings with winter scenes of ice skating on frozen ponds, crisp snowflakes and mountains, trees laden with snow. A variety of photos will be used as a reference ( not copied) for winter scenes. Also, different objects for still life will be provided. Students will learn the different techniques of drawing using crayons, pencils, markers and pastels. Students will be learning about perspective, composition, making lines and texture. It will be a winter blast! 8 weeks ($85) (Evmorphia is a painter who has been teaching art for the past 20 years locally and abroad. Evmorphia taught out of her studio for 10 years. Currently she is teaching at the enrichment programs at the Pierce School and the Devotion School. She also teaches at the The Wellness Community ,a center for cancer, support, education and hope.)

Karate develops total body awareness, confidence, and self control. Emphasis is on learning stances, blocks, conditioning, and sparring techniques. The instructor, Duane Lucia, has a black belt and has been teaching karate to children and adults for over 20 years.

(Duane (sensei) has been teaching martial arts for thirty-five years and is the founder of Sanchin Martial Arts. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts with degrees in psychology and movement education and has been with the Pierce School Enrichment Program for over twenty years.)
