                                                                            Math Enrichment

                                                                            NOTE: Math League seasons ends March 6.

                                                                            Math League (Grades 4-6)

                                                                            Math League is a district-wide program for Brookline students grades 4-6.  The regular Math League season is Dec. 5 to March 8. 

                                                                            Math League practices are a parent-coached activity.  Starting Dec. 5, Pierce's team will have "practice" every morning, and on Thursday afternoon.   The morning sessions are from 7:20am - 7:55am  in the upstairs Spanish room.  The afternoon session will be on Thursday from 2:25pm - 3pm  in the OLD 4G classroom, next to 6G and 4H.   Each practice has a different topic:
                                                                            • Mondays: Problem Solving
                                                                            • Tuesdays: Bases
                                                                            • Wednesdays: Geometery
                                                                            • Thursdays: Operations (morning), Problem Solving (afternoon)
                                                                            • Fridays: Patterns 

                                                                            Kids select the topics they want to practice (typically 1 or 2 topics) and come each week on that day(s).  

                                                                            There are 3 meets in which Pierce competes against the other schools in Brookline.  The meets are open to 5th and 6th graders, 4th graders can participate in the practices but not the meets. The meets take place at Devotion School, from 1:30-5:00, bus transportation will be provided to and from Pierce. The meets are: January 18, February 16 and March 6 (with a snow date of March 8).

                                                                            CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PIERCE MATH LEAGUE TEAM!

                                                                            At February 16th’s meet, the Pierce team won a first place trophy in the category of Operations.  Overall, Pierce placed second out of the nine Brookline schools that were competing. A special congratulations to the following four students who received perfect scores:
                                                                            • Henry H. in Patterns and Operations
                                                                            • Rohan B. in Bases and Operations
                                                                            • Brian T. in Bases
                                                                            • Liam D. in Geometry

                                                                            On Wednesday, January 18th, thirty-one Pierce students represented Pierceat the town-wide Math League competition! We are very proud of theterrific team work by all!  Pierce ranked 4th place out of nine Brookline schools.  A special congratulations to the students who received a perfect score in their topic:Christian (6F), Brian (6S), Miriam (5G), Dashiell (6G), Carolin (6S), and Zander (6L), as well as Rohan(6L) who received two perfect scores and Henry who took home a trophy for three perfect scores!  Great job Math League!

                                                                            FREE MATH TUTORING

                                                                            Does your child need some help in math? Brookline High students offer free tutoring to Pierce students in grades 3-6 on Wednesdays from 4-5pm.  The sessions start on November 2, and run almost every Wednesday in the cafeteria through the first week of May. Starting in February, they'll even provide MCAS practice.  

                                                                            Don't miss out on this great opportunity!For an enrollment form or more information please email math specialist Jeanne Wilson, or inquire with your child's teacher. 

                                                                            MATHCOUNTS (Grades 7-8)

                                                                            For seventh and eighth grade students and led by Pierce teachers, this program includes challenging math problems and a math competition in the Winter.
                                                                            MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots
                                                                            involvement in every U.S. state and territory.

                                                                            Problem of the Week (K-8)

                                                                            Family Math Games - Thanks!

                                                                            Dear PTO,

                                                                            Thank you so much for your support of the Family Math Games Afternoon. Yesterday's event for first and second graders was a huge success! I'm not sure this would be possible without your support!

                                                                            We had 99 first and second grade students playing math games with their families and teachers! That's more than 50% of the students! It was quite a sight to see so many children and their families engaged and excited about math.

                                                                            I'd like to extend a special thanks to the Pierce teachers and interns for helping to create such a memorable evening, especially - Dave Carter,
                                                                            Annemarie Marcus, David Weinstein, Amie Buchman, Heidi Young, Dominique
                                                                            Herard, Jenny Yee, Eleni Venturas, Erin Gallagher in 2H, Lindsay Gordon in
                                                                            2Y and Michelle Solek. And an extra thanks goes to Tom Carco in 1H,
                                                                            Grace Stewart in 2Le and parent volunteer, Dianne Malabanan, who prepared
                                                                            and assembled over 100 games. And thank you to Pierce's exceptional
                                                                            custodial staff - Jackie, Jimmy and Peter.

                                                                            It's so fabulous to be able to tell parents that these games are available in the Pierce library for students to check out (thanks to PTO support).
