Physical Education

As mandated by the state, all students in grades 5-8 must be screened for scoliosis each year. We do this as part of our Physical Education program. If we suspect something, we will refer the student to the nurse for a second opinion. If your child has already been screened as part of his/her physical exam, please send in a copy of the physical or a note stating so. If students provide us with a note, they will not have to be screened during class.

Any student wishing to try out for the Pierce Coed Indoor Soccer team must register on familyID.com and provide a copy of a current (within the past 13 months) physical exam prior to the start of tryouts.  Click here for a full list of sports opportunities at Pierce

PE Update – March 2017

In grades K-2 we have just completed a unit on striking and volleying.  We used our hands, tennis rackets and frisbees to strike and volley balloons and beach balls.  We played some fun games using our striking and volleying skills.

In grades 3-8 we have just completed our volleyball unit.  The students worked on the skills of bumping, setting and serving before playing some actual games of volleyball.

PE Update – February 2017

We are happy to introduce Tim Gill as our student teacher for this spring.  Tim is a graduate student from Boston University.  He was with us at Pierce this fall one day a week and now has joined us full time until May.  Tim has already made a lot of connections with the students here at Pierce and we are excited to have him join us!

In grades K-2 we have focused a lot on underhand and overhand throwing and catching.  The students practiced the skills in various stations and also played some fun new games using their skills.

In grades 3-8 we completed a three week unit of basketball which many of our students really enjoyed.  In grades 3-6 we focused a lot on skill development.  We worked on dribbling, passing and shooting.  The 7th and 8th grades reviewed their skills and played games focusing on ball movement and defensive principles.

All students in grades 5-8 have just completed their annual Polar Go Fit fitness assessment.  The assessment covers different components of fitness such as; cardiovascular, flexibility and muscular strength and endurance.  Each students will receive the assessment via their parent/guardians e-mail.  Please look for this in the coming weeks.  We ask that you please review it with your child.

Sometime after vacation we will also be conducting scoliosis screening for all students in grades 5-8. If your child has already been screened or you choose not to have them screened at school that is fine.  Please send in a note with your child to excuse them from this screening process.

This past week all students completed our Pierce Ninja Warrior course!  We have adapted some obstacles from the popular television show American Ninja Warrior for our students here at Pierce.

We are currently in the midst of our gymnastics and strength training unit which is very popular with many of our students.

PE Update – September 2016

Welcome back Pierce students and families! We hope you all had a great and active summer vacation. We are looking forward to an exciting year in our Physical Education (P.E.) classes.

We would like to welcome Steve Lore to our team, he will be teaching P.E. and Health this year.  He is also working at a few other schools in the district.  We are happy to have Steve join our team!

We will be having grade 7/8 coed volleyball tryouts the week of September 19th.  If your student is interested in trying out please sign him/her up through the website familyID.com.  We also need to have a current physical exam on file.  You can send it in to Mr. Miceli or to Nurse Mary D'Amore. More information regarding 7/8 volleyball will be e-mailed very soon.

Our very popular, annual Cross Country meet will be held on Thursday, October 20th (rain date Friday the 21st).  This event is open to all students in grades 5-8.  Last year we had over 100 students run which was the most of any of the Brookline schools. We hope to have another large group of runners compete this year!

Go Pierce Pride!!!
